It is evident that accessibility, area, and aesthetics do influence park use and are things that need to be taken into consideration when creating a new green space or when working with already existing green spaces. The issue found with these parks is that they all do fulfill these three categories, but an area in need of attention is the appearance of the parks; more specifically the transient problem and unclean restrooms. The less these parks are used, the more they continue to be taken over by transients, thus resulting in poor maintenance and cleanliness of the park. As seen at Washington and Palomares Park, the observed number of transients was always a lot lower than compared to Garfield. This could be because those two parks are used to a greater extent by the community than Garfield. A study done by Slater, Pugach, Lin, & Bontu (2016), assessed 300 parks in Chicago, Illinois that were in need of repair and lacked a sense of safety. The Chicago Plays! initiative was organized to revamp these parks through a hands on approach with different community groups and local citizens, in which they worked together to renovate the parks in their communities. Together, they built new playgrounds and essentially a new space that was suited to their preferences. This project was successful, and the study concluded that "involving community members in renovations can have a positive effect on park utilization" (Slater, Pugach, Lin, & Bontu 2016). With this initiative in mind, this could be a potential solution to not only improve the appearance of parks, but to encourage the community to engage in utilizing their local green spaces more than they are being used now; thus keeping the four virtues alive in Pomona.
